That being said, do be aware that this book includes content about eating disorders, and perhaps stay away from this read if that’s a topic you’re sensitive to. It won’t be possible to read this book without comparing it to THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN, but I would encourage you to, where you can, look beyond this comparison to appreciate what does make this book compelling and engaging. The Soul Break from Final Fantasy Record Keeper. Okay, I think I'm done updating this one, I just kept of finding little flaws, but I'm sticking with this version. One of my favorite elements of Book 1 in the Collector Trilogy was its juxtaposition of the beauty of the “Garden” with the horrific acts committed there. Hutchison’s self-reinvention isn’t quite as successful here—lost in THE ROSES OF MAY is the tension that drives THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN forward—but that’s not to say it isn’t without other successes, too. This blog post is going to be shorter than my previous Nordic Noir November posts for a very simple reason: when it comes to Icelandic crime fiction, I have two ride-or-die authors whose work I will literally always read, no matter what, and those are the two authors I want to spotlight for you all today. THE ROSES OF MAY delivers a more measured read, focusing on the survivors of horrific acts rather than on the acts themselves. In THE ROSES OF MAY, Hutchison once again weaves beauty together with death—this time, through a killer who leaves his victims in picturesque local churches, their hair adorned with flowers. Priya is resilient, unapologetic, and fierce - she and her mother are the kind of female characters I want more of in crime fiction. THE KINGDOM is a masterful work of rural noir, a story that will pluck you up from wherever you are sitting and bring you to a small (fictional) town nestled in the mountains of western Norway. I read some of the reviews before starting Roses of May, so I was very much aware that this was not going to be a follow up to The Butterfly Garden (The Collector #1), only that there might be the same character ...or two. On the one hand: your expectations going into THE ROSES OF MAY will be more important than ever. (Have you read THE FOURTH MONKEY by J.D. Priya Sravasti’ is being targeted by a serial killer; the same killer that murdered her sister several years ago. Priya has been through a horrific trauma, and Hutchison does a superb job illustrating how this trauma plays out in Priya’s personal life. If you have a chance of appreciating this book for its own merits, it will have to be because you’ve prepared yourself for just how different it will be—and I think, unfortunately, that will be a barrier for readers who haven’t been made aware of this difference before they pick the book up. With THE KINGDOM, he has delivered another outstanding work of crime fiction, a story that explores themes of family, love, and loyalty, all wrapped up in a gritty, slow-burning, rural noir package. I recently read - and fell head-over-heels for - the dark, twisted page-turner that is THE BUTTERFLY GARDEN by Dot Hutchison, Book 1 in Hutchison’s Collector Trilogy. Roses of May is unfortunately not one of these books :( I have been waiting for it as much as you but it's only a weak shadow of the original. I was so excited to read The Roses of May after The Butterfly Garden. I’m happy to report that Cooke’s latest release more than met my (high!) But (contrary to how it seems so far!) I comment all the time about how authors like Ruth Ware and Clare Mackintosh are so adept at “reinventing themselves” with each new book, delivering a read that strikes a similar tone while still being fresh and inventive. The event from Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia. Roses of May Staining my soul and stinging my eyes the red on my hands won't wash away, wash away no where to run from what I have done I'm no longer, no longer a Rose of May Storm clouds are creeping closer danger is drawing near why am I not protecting all that I once held dear? This in no way affects my opinion of the above book. Hutchison doesn’t shy away from examining how this disordered eating ebbs and flows in Priya’s life, and, while it’s quite affecting and challenging to read some of these scenes, I so appreciated Hutchison’s candor on this topic. Happy Sunday, readers, and welcome back to our weekly spotlight on Scandinavian crime fiction! Achetez neuf ou d'occasion Readers will pick up where we left off with the surviving Butterflies from Book 1 - these young women will serve as a secondary plotline in Book 2.
